En el puerto de la Quesera, en la cara norte de la sierra de Ayllón, se encuentra uno de los 3 hayedos "oficiales" del Sistema Central. Digo "oficiales" ya que en varios valles de esta sierra existen otros pequeños bosquetes y ejemplares solitarios de hayas, desconocidos por la mayoría.
Sin duda el hayedo de la Pedrosa es menos conocido y célebre que sus hermanos de la Tejera Negra y Montejo. Y no es por ello menos hermoso, sino todo lo contrario: este bosque, sobre todo en otoño, es uno de los parajes más bellos de estas montañas del centro de España.
On the North face of the "Sierra de Ayllón", on the "Quesera" mountain pass we find one of the 3 "official" beech forests in the "Sistema Central" mountains. I say "official" because in several valleys of these mountains some other small beech tree groves, which are completely unknown by most people, exist.
Surely the "Pedrosa" beech forest is not as famous as his brothers, Tejera Negra and Montejo. Yet it is not less attractive, but quite the reverse: this forest, especially in Autumn, is one of the most beautiful places in these mountains in the centre of Spain.
En las zonas más bajas encontramos un espeso bosque de roble, que según ascendemos, es reemplazado por bosquetes de hayas, con serbales y acebos.
In the lowest part of the mountain we find a deep oak tree forest, which is replaced as we ascend by beech tree groves, together with rowans and holly trees.
Las hayas siguen los cursos de los arroyos, donde el suelo es más profundo y fértil, y guarda mejor la humedad.
The beech trees occupy the areas next to the brooks, where the soil is deeper and more fertile, and keeps the moisture better.
En esta imagen comprendemos por qué es llamado "la Pedrosa", ya que las hayas crecen entre auténticos pedregales en estas agrestes laderas.
In this photograph we understand why it is called "la Pedrosa" (rocky), since the beech trees grow in stony places on these rough slopes.
Musgos y líquenes crecen sobre las ramas y troncos. Nos sumergimos en un paisaje más propio de regiones del norte de Europa. La humedad y la tenue luz del otoño crean un ambiente de gran belleza.
Mosses and lichens grow on the branches and trunks. We plunge into a scenery more typical of Northern Europe. Humidity and the dim Autumn light create a really beautiful atmosphere.
Subimos al puerto de la Quesera para admirar un paisaje casi inalterado por la mano del hombre. En las zonas altas del hayedo pequeñas hayas crecen y van colonizando nuevo territorio. Desde luego este bosque es de todo menos "relicto" como se suele oír y leer en muchos textos científicos. Mejor viajar que leer para conocer la realidad de un lugar.
We ascend to the "Quesera" mountain pass to admire a scenery almost unaltered by human beings. On the higher areas of the beech grove, small trees grow and colonize new territory. Definetely this forest is everything but "relict" as we can often hear and read in plenty of scientific texts. You´d better travel than read to know the reality of a place.
