MONASTERIO DE PIEDRA

BARRANCO DEL PARAISO / EL PARAISO GULLY

    Hoy nos dirigimos de nuevo al parque natural del Hayedo de Tejera Negra. Vamos a explorar uno de sus recónditos rincones, conocido como el Barranco del  Paraíso. Un nombre muy apropiado para este paradisíaco lugar, afortunadamente aislado y desconocido, lo que hace que se conserve virgen y mantenga su belleza natural original.

    Today we're making our way towards the Hayedo de Tejera Negra Nature Reserve. We're going to explore one of its remote spots, known as El Paraíso Gully (Paradise Gully). A well deserved name for this place, which is fortunately isolated and unknown. Thanks to this, it remains virgin and keeps its original natural beauty.

    Salimos de Madrid en plena ola de calor Sahariana, abrumado por las malas noticias: incendios que arrasan nuestra naturaleza y la crisis económica causada por la avaricia humana que también ha destruido muchos parajes naturales, sobre todo en la costa. El fuego y el cemento, los mayores enemigos de la naturaleza en este país. Necesitamos encontrar un paraíso urgentemente.

    We depart from Madrid in the middle of a heat wave from the Sahara, overwhelmed by bad news: fires that devastate our nature and the economic crisis caused by human avarice which has also destroyed lots of natural places, especially on the coast. Fire and cement, the greatest enemies of nature in this country. I need to find a paradise urgently.

    Remontamos el río Lillas y tras un agradable paseo encontramos la entrada del barranco.

    We go up river Lillas and after a nice walk we find the entrance to the gully.

    Subimos a un promontorio y observamos el pico de la Buitrera (2045 m), bajo el que crecen estos bosques de hayas.

    We climb a hill and we can see the Buitrera peak (2045 m), under which these beech forests grow.

   Encontramos en una ladera este magnífico tejo de edad y valor incalculable. Su grueso tronco nos dice que estamos ante un monumento natural. El árbol inmortal hace que nos paremos a contemplarlo con admiración durante un buen rato.

    We find on a slope this splendid yew tree of an incalculable age and value. Its thick trunk tells us that we are before a natural monument. The immortal tree makes us stop to comtemplate it with admiration for a while.

   Según ascendemos el barranco se hace más amplio y el bosque más espléndido. Nos sumergimos en un mundo de frescor y humedad. La temperatura bajo las hayas es agradable, mientras que fuera el fuerte sol calienta y hace que la temperatura suba por encima de los 30º. Admiramos unos paisajes puramente atlánticos.

   As we ascend the gully becomes wider and the forest  more splendid. We submerge in a world of freshness and humidity. The temperature under the beech trees is quite nice, while outside the strong sun is hot and the temperature rises above 30º celsius. We admire a purely atlantic scenery.

     Finalmente llegamos a la parte más alta del barranco y el bosque desaparece, cediendo espacio al matorral y a algunas jóvenes hayas que conquistan nuevo territorio.

   Finally we get to the top of the gully and the forest disappears, ceding land to the thicket and some small beech trees which are conquering new territory.

    Miramos hacia atrás por donde hemos subido, y enseguida deseamos volver a penetrar en el bosque porque el sol es abrasador hoy.

    We look back to where we have ascended from, and we immediatly desire to enter the forest again because of the scorching sun today.

   Volvemos a entrar en el bosque y descendemos y nos dirigimos hacia el coche de nuevo, con una agradable sensación de paz. Sabemos que todavía quedan paraísos que el hombre no ha destruido. Nos agrada haber pasado una jornada en una naturaleza intacta, inalterada por el hombre. No encontramos ninguna huella de presencia humana: ningún papel, lata ni basura, que desgraciadamente son habituales en otras montañas más frecuentadas por el ser humano en este país de incultos y maleducados. De ahí  el origen de todos nuestros males: la corrupción política y la falta de sensibilidad por el medio natural no son sino resultado de la falta de educación.


    We go through the forest and we descend again heading for the car. We know that there are still paradises man has not destroyed yet. We are glad to have spent a day in an intact nature, unchanged by man. We find no trace of human presence: no papers, no cans or other sort of rubbish, which are frequently found on other mountains more frequented by human beings in this country of illiterate and bad-mannered people. All our evils come from here: political corruption and the lack of sensibility for nature are just a result of the lack of education.

LAS MACHOTAS

He estado muy ocupado estas semanas y no he podido actualizar el blog mucho. Espero poder añadir más entradas próximamente. Aquí dejo algunas fotos tomadas durante la ascensión a Las Machotas, en la sierra de Guadarrama. Estas montañas se tienen que enfrentar a la dura sequía un verano más.

I've been quite busy these weeks and I haven't been able to update the blog. I hope to add more entries soon. Here you have some photos taken during the climb of Las Machotas, in the Sierra de Guadarrama. These mountains have to confront a hard drought during summertime.

EL VALLE PERDIDO / THE LOST VALLEY

    El valle de las Batuecas se encuentra en unas de las regiones más aisladas de España. Esto ha contribuido a la su visión mítica y legendaria tanto en la literatura como en la tradición popular. Descendemos al valle y nos encontramos con un auténtico paraíso: naturaleza pura y salvaje, sin apenas presencia humana.

    The Batuecas valley is located in one of the most isolated regions in Spain. It has contributed to its mythical and legendary view, both in literature and in the popular tradition. We descend to the valley and we find an authentic paradise: intact and wild nature, almost without a human trace.
 

    Después de un agradable paseo, llegamos al monasterio, elegido por los religiosos como lugar de retiro espiritual. La verdad es que no podían haber encontrado un lugar mejor.

    After a nice walk, we get to the monastery, chosen by the monks as a place for spiritual retreat. In fact, they couldn´t have found a better place.

    Seguimos la senda junto al río y nos encontramos con árboles monumentales, como este gigantesco eucalipto, plantado seguramente por los monjes en tiempos remotos.

   We follow the path next to the river and we find some huge trees, like this gigantic eucalyptus, probably planted by the monks in far off times.

    Grandes tejos que nos llaman la atención, tanto por su tamaño como por la buena salud que demuestran. El árbol inmortal parece haber encontrado en este paraje un paraíso donde crecer tranquilo.

    Huge yew trees attract our attention, because of their size and the good health they seem to enjoy. It seems the immortal tree has found in this place a paradise where they can grow undisturbed.
 

    Viejos alcornoques crecen en las laderas soleadas.

     Ancient cork trees grow on the sunny slopes.

    Volvemos al coche tras un paseo muy agradable y nos dirigimos a la comarca de Las Hurdes. Hace 10 años visité estas tierras aisladas y agrestes, y me fui maravillado de su belleza y de sus extensos bosques de pinos que tapizaban las laderas de sus montañas. Esta vez la desilusión que me he llevado ha sido monumental al comprobar que ese paisaje ya ha desaparecido pasto de las llamas que han arrasado esta región en la última década. He leído que un tercio de su superficie ha sido víctima de fuegos, casi todos provocados en los últimos años por razones mezquinas, como la búsqueda de subvenciones y la venta de madera quemada.

     Sin duda un nuevo planteamiento es necesario en esta región para evitar este espectáculo lamentable. La conjunción de incultura y falta de recursos han resultado desastrosos para la naturaleza de la región. La leyenda negra de esta comarca continúa en la actualidad por otras razones. Ninguna foto mereció la pena hacerse esta vez en estas tierras castigadas durante tantos siglos.


    We returned to the car after a nice walk and we made our way towards the region of Las Hurdes. 10 years ago I visited this isolated and rugged land, and I left astonished by its beauty and its slopes carpeted by extensive pine tree forests. This time my disappointment has been enormous after finding out that that scenery has already disappeared because of the fires which have devastated the area in the last decade. I have read that one third of the territory has been a victim of the fires, most of them provoked by man for small-minded reasons, such as the pursuit of subsidies and the sale of burned wood.


    Definitely a new approach is necessary for this region to avoid this regretable spectacle. The combination of ignorance and poverty has proved to be disastrous for the nature of this region. The "black legend" of this comarca continues nowadays for other reasons. No photos were worth taking this time in this land punished for so many centuries.

VALLE DEL JERTE

    El valle del Jerte es una de las joyas de la Sierra de Gredos. Es famoso por la espectacular floración de sus cerezos, que visten el valle de blanco, y que es uno de los símbolos del comienzo de la primavera en España. Esta zona del Sistema Central tiene una pluviometría elevadísima, y eso se nota en el paísaje: el verde es intenso y los bosques lo cubren todo, junto a los cultivos de cerezos.

    The Jerte valley is one of jewels of the Sierra de Gredos. It´s famous because of the spectacular flowering of its cherry trees, which dresses the valley in white, and it is a symbol of the begining of springtime in Spain. This zone of the Central System has got an abundant rainfall, and it can be seen in the landscape: the intense green and the forests cover everything, together with the cherry trees growings.

     En las zonas más húmedas encontramos bosques de castaños, que aquí son cultivos que son talados periódicamente para el aprovechamiento de su madera.

    In the wettest areas we find chesnut forests, which here are growings which are cut down periodically for the exploitation of their wood.

    El valle es una sucesión de cultivos de cerezos, bosques, arroyos, cascadas y verdes prados. Un paisaje refrescante que invita al relax y a la paz.

    The valley is a succession of cherry trees growings, forests, brooks, waterfalls and green meadows. A refreshing scenery that invites us to relaxation and peace.

SIERRA DE FRANCIA

     La Sierra de Francia es uno de los territorios más occidentales del Sistema Central. Se encuentra al sur de la provincia de Salamanca. Nosotros accedemos a ella tras visitar La Alberca, uno de los pueblos más bellos y mejor conservados de España, sin duda. La zona en general es de gran belleza, con pueblos típicos y encantadores y una naturaleza espléndida.

      The "Sierra de Francia" is one the westernmost areas in the Central System. It is situated in the south of the Salamanca province. We approach it after visiting La Alberca, on of the most beautiful and best preserved villages in Spain. The area is really nice, with typical and charming small villages and a splendid nature.


    Subimos a la montaña más famosa de la zona, la Peña de Francia. En su cima, a 1727m de altitud, se encuentra un famoso santuario y un mirador desde el que tenemos unas vistas magníficas. El principal atractivo de la región es su carácter agreste, debido a su aislamiento y escasa población. Parece que estas tierras han escapado a la fealdad del mundo moderno, y eso se agradece enormemente.

     We ascend the most famous mountain in the area, the "Peña de Francia". On its top, at 1727m of altitude, we find a well-known sanctuary and a viewpoint from which we have some magnificent views. The main appeal of this region is its wild nature, due to its isolation and scarce population. It seems this land has escaped from the ugliness of modern world, and that´s something I really appreciate.

NIEVE EN PRIMAVERA / SPRINGTIME SNOW

     La primavera ha comenzado con un clima frío y húmedo. La nieve se ha visto en todas las montañas de España y en algunas ciudades. Este era el aspecto del valle de la Barranca en la sierra de Guadarrama esta mañana.


     Springtime has begun with a cold and wet weather. Snow has fallen on all the mountains and some cities in Spain. This is what the Barranca Valley in the Guadarrama range looked like this morning.
